Mayor Mike Kermode held a Civic Service on Sunday 11th June in St. Mary’s Church, followed by refreshments at the Community Centre.
The service was timed to link with “Volunteers’ Week” and this theme was highlighted in the order of service, which included a reading of the parable of the Good Samaritan and the hymn When I Needed a Neighbour.
Volunteering and community service are key themes for Mayor Mike. He said “As Rhuddlan’s Mayor, I want to thank all of the wonderful volunteers who make such a positive difference in our town. Volunteers are active in so many ways. They might be managing community facilities; organising youth groups; they might be involved with the town’s environment or it’s history; some will be involved with sporting activities and some with people’s artistic and musical interests. Some volunteers will be active on a regular basis such as in the activities at the Community Centre and some might only volunteer occasionally, such as giving up an hour or two to help with a litter pick”.
“The contribution of volunteers is often unseen and unrecognised by many people but for those people that benefit from volunteering the benefits can be huge. It might be the opportunity to have a social meal and a chat with others, it might be involvement with other young people with similar interests – there are so many ways that volunteers can make a difference within our community”.
Mayor Mike will be working with Denbighshire Voluntary Service Council (DVSC) to organise a Volunteer Fair in Rhuddlan later in the year. This will give local volunteer groups the opportunity to show people what they do in Rhuddlan and will also show people what they can do and what the benefits they can gain from being volunteers. He also said that the Town Council is always keen to support the work of the volunteer groups in the town and that funding is available to support their activities.
