Pirates from Rhuddlan help to raise funds for Dementia Group

Rhuddlan Dementia Group held a very successful coffee morning which had a local history flavour. It started with a presentation by David Thomas from Rhuddlan History Society with a potted history of the town, including many interesting slides.

This was followed by a talk by John Overton from Company-k, Theatre in Education Group, which was an entertaining and interesting tale about two brothers from Rhuddlan who eventually found themselves as merchant sea captains in Norfolk Virginia in the 18th Century and how they became pirates with the theft of treasure from a Spanish galleon. The tail’s punchline links the brother’s relatives to Robert Louis Stevenson and his famous book Treasure Island. One of the brothers did have a wooden leg so there is a clear link with the fictional pirate Captain Flint.

Nearly 60 people attended the coffee morning including the Town Mayor, Cllr. Arwel Roberts and they all enjoyed the talks by both speakers. The raffle and donations raised over £160 towards the Group’s activities; which include the very popular Music Memories sessions and the Sit and Be Fit chair exercise sessions.
