The Aelwyn Morgan Award is given annually by Rhuddlan Town Council to a person or persons who have done outstanding work in our local community. Aelwyn Morgan was a former head teacher of Ysgol Y Castell and was held in high esteem by all who knew him and his commitment to our community was significant, this award remembers him.
The council is delighted to announce that the 2024 winner is Maggie Thompson-Williams. Maggie was nominated in recognition of all her hard work in the Community of Rhuddlan. Maggie has volunteered and helped at the Rhuddlan Stroke Club for 16 years, making lunches and helping run sit and fit activities. Each time the Stroke Club meets equates to a day of volunteering at the Community Centre.
For the past 5 years Maggie has been one of 3 ladies who set up and now run a fortnightly lunch club called “GEMs” – this being the initials of the 3 ladies involved. The lunch club is held on a Friday and attracts on average 30 people, a lot of whom are elderly, disabled or live alone, with this event being the highlight for many. Maggie makes the lunch with the other ladies, works in the kitchen and then helps to put on a quiz and celebrate birthdays which I know is very popular with people attending. Again, each event requires a full day volunteering at the Community Centre
The Community Centre is very popular venue for a lot of events throughout the year and Maggie volunteers to assist the staff and trustees in helping to run these events. The events include the Community Market, the Remembrance Sunday event, the Town Councils Christmas Carols around the tree and lots of other ad hoc events. It is fair to say Maggie spends a lot of her time at the Community Centre on a voluntary basis and helps to make the Centre the very hub of Rhuddlan’s vibrant community.
As if that is not enough Maggie has over recent years taken up Crown Green Bowling at Rhuddlan Bowling club. Maggie has taken to the sport like a duck to water, however Maggie being Maggie has not been satisfied at relaxing and enjoying the game, she has thrown herself into helping to run a lot of functions the club run. Maggie has in her own time taken a course in Food and Hygiene and obtained the various certificates necessary to help the club provide catering facilities for events they have participated in.
Maggie is a deserving winner and was presented with this award by Rhuddlan Mayor Val Simmons at the Council’s November meeting. Mayor Val Simmons said “This award is only awarded to people who have significantly contributed to the community within our town There is no doubt that Maggie is a shining example of this. It is a pleasure and honour to present this award to Maggie Thomson-Williams”.
